Congratulations to the Georgia Tech Women in Chemistry Committee on
being selected as the 2006 Southeastern Regional Meeting recipient of
the Stanley C. Israel Regional Award for Advancing Diversity in the
Chemical Sciences! The award is going to be presented at the American
Chemical Society (ACS) 58th Southeastern Regional Meeting (SERMACS)
award luncheon on November 2, 2006 in Augusta, GA.

2) WARNING: Robberies
On 9/30/2006, at 12:00 a.m., a student stated that he was robbed on
Bobby Dodd Way near the Library. The student stated that three unknown
males followed him while he was walking on Bobby Dodd Way. One of the
men snatched the student's book bag then demanded all of his money. The
man removed the cash from the student's wallet and threw all of his
property back at him. The student was not injured. The men were last
seen running towards Tech Tower.
 Description of Suspects

*         23-25 years old 
*         6' tall 
*         Gold teeth
*         Yellow shirt
*         Blue jeans
 Suspect #2
*         Black male
*         23-25 years old
*         6' tall

*         White shirt

*         Tattoo on right forearm

On October 4, 2006 at 8:30 p.m., a student was robbed at gunpoint by two
unknown males near Fourth Street and Atlantic Drive. The student stated
that one of the males pointed a handgun at him before stealing his phone
and wallet.

*	Black male 
*	5'7"-5'9" tall 
*	Slender build 
*	Early twenties 
*	Long dreadlock hairstyle 
*	Last seen wearing baggy blue jeans, a black t-shirt, and a
bandana over his face

*	Last seen wearing baggy blue jeans, a baseball cap, and a
bandana over his face 

For on campus transportation from 6 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., please call
404-385-RIDE. For safety escorts after 2:30 a.m., please contact the
Georgia Tech Police Department at 404-894-2500. Safety escorts will be
limited to the jurisdictional boundaries of the Georgia Tech Police
Department. If you have any information regarding this incident, please

3) "Office Creeper" on the Georgia Tech campus 
Please Be On the Look Out (BOLO) regarding an "Office Creeper" on the
Georgia Tech campus.
An "Office Creeper" is basically a male or female who steals valuables
from offices.
Please lock office doors and secure your valuables at all times, even if
you'll only be away for a few minutes.
Immediately report suspicious activity to the Georgia Tech Police
Department at 404-894-2500. Provide the dispatcher with a detailed
description of the person and their last known location or direction of
travel.

4) WARNING: Increase in the number of reports of stolen bicycles from
campus 
The Georgia Tech Police Department has recently received an increase in
the number of reports of stolen bicycles from campus. Many of the
bicycles that have recently been reported stolen were secured with a
cable lock. Please secure the frame of  your bicycle with a U-shaped
lock to a bike rack. Do you not secure bicycles to hand rails, lamp
posts, or trees.
The Georgia Tech Police Department offers a free bicycle registration.
If you would like to register your bicycle, please stop by the Georgia
Tech Police Department.
Please be on the look out for anyone seen loitering near bike racks or
tampering with bike locks.
Immediately contact the Georgia Tech Police Department at 404-894-2500
to report suspicious activity

5) Niki in the Garden - RESCHEDULED
Rescheduled to Tuesday, October 24, 3:45 p.m. meet at the WRC
transportation provided Cost: $12 
The Niki Charitable Art Foundation brings the legacy of the late
artist's ideal.  This is the world's largest exhibition of
internationally renowned artist Niki de Saint Phalles outdoor sculptures
ever presented.  For a limited time this exhibit will be available.
Please join us for an evening in the Atlanta Botanical Garden

view sculptures that have been delighting international audiences for
decades.
 
6) October Graduate Women's Lunch - Sign up before Thursday

Managing Stress Through Time Management: The reality of having too much
to do in too little time is a major source of stress that is commonly
ignored.  Especially for highly achieving people, the temptation is to
continue to try to do more with less and to overcommit.  These traps can
cause successful people to burn out. This workshop provides strategies
for successful time management to increase efficiency and overall well
being. Presented by Nelson Binggeli, Ph.D.

7) Women's Leadership Conference  - Register by October 18 for

Registration for the November 3-4 Women's Leadership Conference began

The 10th Georgia Tech Women's Leadership Conference will be held Friday,
November 3 (5:30 to 8:30 p.m.) and Saturday, November 4 (8:30 a.m. to 3
p.m.) at the Georgia Tech Student Center. The conference includes three
keynote speakers, 15 workshop options, a Women of Distinction awards
ceremony and a special Women in the Workforce/Alumnae track.

8)  "The Haunting Histories of the Female Body: Gynecology, Obstetrics
and Women's Health" Symposium
"The Haunting Histories of the Female Body: Gynecology, Obstetrics and
Women's Health" explores the visual, historical and political nature of
the reproductive female body. Built around a film series, which will
begin this Wednesday, October 11 (see details below), and a symposium,
which will take place on November 17, this interdisciplinary project
proves to be as entrancing as it is illuminating. The symposium includes
papers from the areas of literary, historical and cultural studies as
well as a presentation and roundtable discussion with physicians and
midwives. The film series includes Dead Ringers, Born in the USA (a
documentary on childbirth in America), A Midwives Tale, and The Abortion
Diaries among others.
 
First movie in the series will be shown Wednesday, October 11 at 7pm in
the The Library East Commons. Professor Andrew Uroskie will introduce
and discuss the short film "Vital Statistics of a Citizen, Simply
Obtained," by the American artist Martha Rosler, which focuses on the
historical and present-day subjugation of women to a scientific-medical
establishment principally guided by normalcy and deviation. For

12)  Improving Student Learning Using Shared Dialogue: Peer Coaching
Workshop
DATE: October 19, 2006
TIME: 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM
LOCATION: Ferst Room, GT Library and Information Center

Working with peers is perhaps the single most efficient and effective
way to improve student learning in the classroom and create shared
dialogue about common issues in teaching. This interactive workshop
introduces the technique of peer coaching as a simple tool to improve
student learning and create personally relevant and meaningful dialogue
with colleagues about teaching and learning. Participants will have the
opportunity to build and use essential skills that are used in the peer
coaching process.
