[robocup-humanoid] Asking about wireless communication at HL2008

Hi,

in previous years all wireless infrastructure was provided by the
organizers. The Small Size League is an exception because teams are allowed
using their own wireless communication, but on a different frequency. If
they use WLAN, they have to use the access points provided. This makes it a
lot easier for the general organizers to control the "wireless chaos".
Normally the general organizers define the wireless channels used by each
league. They also provide "wireless hunters" who identify and shut down
illegal networks. This was the case for most previous RoboCups, except
Atlanta.

The humanoid league is rather lax about wireless. In contrast, the Standard
Platform League has the rule that robots are allowed to use wireless, but
any other equipment (e.g. laptops) is not. So teams have to connect their
computers to the access points by cable. If somebody is not able to switch
off the wireless on his/her computer, the whole computer has to be switched
off. In addition, there is a bandwidth limit for each team during the games
(500kbits/s).

I would expect that WLAN following the standard 802.11g is provided. It is
compatible to 802.11b. Several small computers do not support 802.11a, so
802.11g is a good compromise.

Best regards

Thomas Röfer
