Other than the comments I made, I think everything is good here and it's ready for merge.  We should at some point roll out the same changes to `RASearch`, `RangeSearch`, `FastMKS`, and `DualTreeBoruvka`, but we can open a ticket that says that and just merge these changes now---your call.
