 Ah, sorry if I was vague;
 By "doesn't seem to match anything that more "standard" methods of PCA
 come up with" I mean that the answer is (very) different than the mlpack
 one, so I don't think that comparing times yet is a proper comparison.
 However, I'll set the tolerance to 1e-2, and try on some dataset in the
 near future, and post the results (answers and times).
