Comment (by nslagle):

 Though time is a limiting factor, I think we posed earlier something
 similar to this--a removal of arma from the code directly, and creation of
 an interface allowing us to switch out matrix libraries easily.  This
 would have the advantage of easy speed comparisons with our algorithms
 between various libs.
