Once the positions are filled, Dr. Jim Foley and I are scheduling a one day team building and leadership planning retreat so the new group gets off to a great start and we can grow the organization to one of the best in the country - one that provides career info and professional development opportunities for CoC students. Maureen gtACM Unfilled Officer and Committee Chair Positions - Vice President Internal The Vice Presidents Internal's role is to assist the President and to be a de facto member of all committees. - Secretary The Secretary's role is to maintain records for the chapter, handle some of the chapter's correspondence, and file annual reports with ACM and GT. - Social Director The Social Director is responsible for keeping the chapter involved in social activities. Examples might be a fall welcome event for new students or a spring picnic. - Philanthropy Director The Philanthropy Director is responsible for keeping the chapter involved in philanthropic activities. Typical activities are community outreach to groups like Cool Tech and computer assistance to charitable groups. - Technology Committee Chair Committee maintains all electronic forms of communication such as the website and email lists. - Publicity Committee Chair Committee is responsible for publicizing all events hosted by the chapter. This is typically done by email, web and posters. - Tutoring Committee Chair Committee is responsible for organizing and maintaining the volunteer tutoring program for computing related classes. - Problem-solving contests Committee chair (also known as programming contests chair) Chair serves as liaison to the programming competition team concerning their activities, schedules, and resource needs. Committee organizes activities such as problem-solving contests for GT students, as well as a high school competition. [UWAB] Pumpkin Palooza

Hey girls! I just want to update yall on what is going on with Pumpkin Palooza. We have nixed the charity raffle because we couldn't decide what we wanted to raffle off and we had a limited list of things we could do. Heather, how are the gift certificate/prize donations going? Also, any one is welcome to bake stuff for the bake sale. We also need popcorn and drinks that are not going to be sold. Jordan and I will take care of that and decorations. Sunday afternoon we will need to get together to start decorating the commons and CoC, we will also need to finish posters for our booths and make sure we have all the supplies needed for the booths including small prizes, candy, balloons, etc. If yall can help out on Sunday afternoon that would be great. I will email you later this week with a time and place. Also, I realized that I have a test Monday from 8-10 so I will only be able to stay until 8 but I will be there before to help set-up and I will try to get back as quickly as possible from my test. Alicia and Jordan will be there to make sure things run smoothly. I hope yall are getting excited! Jennifer

Two things- 1. Friday is ladies night. We can all get something to eat and go back to my house for daiquiris, toenail painting, and whatnot. Email me back if you are available and if you have food suggestions. 2. Airbrushed T-shirts with pumpkins on them are 2 for $5. Add your name and bedazzle the heck out of it yourself on Friday. Priyanka will bedazzle shirts for any of you who are unfamiliar with the process, she's an expert. Email me with your size if you want one. All the cool kids are wearing them to the pumpkin palooza. Please join our Dr. Haesun Park and her guest, Dr. Anne Kao for an informal lunch and discussion and I need to know if you are attending so we can order enough food for the pasta bar, so please reply to this note if you can join us. Dr. Kao is giving a technical talk over here in the CCB building after lunch. The purpose of the lunch is to give you a chance to talk with her about her career path (she has a BA and PhD in philosophy and an MS in CS) interests, challenges, etc - whatever you bring up! Below is some background info on Dr. Kao - the topic of her technical talk will be Visual Analytics in Text Data Dr. Anne Kao is a Technical Fellow in Boeing Phantom Works. She joined Boeing in 1990, and has been leading projects in Text Mining, Text Analysis, Natural Language Processing, Knowledge Management and High Performance Computing for 15 years. She led a cross functional team to develop a patented text mining technology TRUST (Text Representation Using Subspace Transformation). TRUST is the search engine inside Pacific Northwest National Lab's Starlight, an information visualization product used by many intelligence analysts. Dr. Kao has been a review panelist for the National Science Foundation's Information Technology Research initiative proposals. She was the chair and organizer for the panel discussion on Text Mining and Natural Language Processing at the ACM Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (SIGKDD) Conference, 2004. The panel attracted an audience of 200-300 people. She guest edited an issue of SIGKDD Explorations in 2005 on the same topic. She recently edited a book "Natural Language Processing and Text Mining" for Springer which is due out first of 2007. She has also been a paper reviewer for SIGKDD, for the Society for Industry and Mathematics (SIAM) Text Mining Workshop, and for the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) Text Mining Workshop since 1999. In recent years, she has extended her interest into Integrated Mining and Information Visualization. She was co-chair and organizer for the Integrated Multimedia Data Mining Workshop at SIGKDD 2003 and 2004, and a paper reviewer for the Information Visualization Conference, 2004.
