iLab Liberia is looking for a qualified College of Computing student, undergraduate or graduate, to participate in its 2012 summer internship program.
iLab Liberia is a non-profit computer laboratory in Monrovia, Liberia that seeks to empower Liberians by providing them with access to cutting-edge technology, equipment and technical expertise. We believe that exposure and access to these resources will promote the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs)  for Liberia's further economic and social development. Co-founded by a Georgia Tech COC graduate in May 2011, iLab has conducted free ICT trainings and workshops for over 200 Liberians, has co-chaired events with Google and the National Democratic Institute, and hosted others including the Carter Center, UC Berkeley's Center for Human Rights, and the national Early Warning and Early Response Working Group.
iLab is looking for a caring, motivated and adventurous intern to help iLab teach introductory courses in computing, develop curriculum based on Liberians' interests, and provide techmentoring to iLab's Liberian staff. The internship would span from May 12th to August 6th. iLab is able to provide a round trip ticket, comfortable accommodation and work-related transportation. A $1,500 stipend for the summer is also provided.
Intern's duties include:
o    Asses needs and co-develop curriculum for iLab's summer courses
o    Based on curriculum above, teach three short courses focused on introductory programming, each meeting roughly 1-2 hours per day, 2-3 days per week.
o    Mentoring iLab's Liberian technical staff - this would include:
§  Seeking to transfer your technical skills to the iLab staff
§  Engendering a broad understanding of all things technical, scientific and the impact these things have for individuals and entire societies
§  Helping staff create efficient and professional written communications, such as proof-reading iLab emails and blog posts
o    Assisting iLab Director and staff as needs arise around the office
o    Working at the iLab office Tuesday through Friday during normal business hours
The ideal candidate has the following qualifications:
o    A junior, senior or master's level computing student with a firm grasp of computing principles
o    Excellent written and verbal communication skills
o    Prior teaching experience as a TA
o    Self-motivated and eager to apply knowledge in an environment with limiting factors and systemic technical challenges
o    Previous international travel experience
o    Willing to rough it and improvise as need be
o    Ability to work in a dynamic environment that requires patience, mutual respect, and a team-oriented mindset
o    A strong desire to use the skills and knowledge acquired at Georgia Tech to better the world
