Applications are invited for two fully funded Research Engineer positions at the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR), Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon, Portugal. The selected candidates will be part of the U. Seville/CATEC/ISR-IST team participating in the MBZIRC2020 robot competition (http://www.mbzirc.com/) to be held in Abu-Dhabi, UAE, 20-24 February 2020.

These Research Engineer positions target candidates holding a Master degree (or equivalent)^1. Each of the selected candidates is expected to work, according to his/her preference, on one of the following two topics:

A) Development and integration of outdoor navigation and manipulation skills into tasks carried out by an Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV), required to solve Challenges 2 and 3 of MBZIRC2020.

B) Development and management of the software architecture that will support the execution of tasks in A) by the UGV, as well as the development and implementation of the cooperation algorithms with the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) that will cooperate with the UGV on Challenges 2 and 3 (responsible: U. Seville + CATEC).

These positions will be supervised by Prof. Pedro U. Lima, Prof. Rodrigo Ventura, Dr. Meysam Basiri, and Dr. Alberto Vale, faculty or research staff at IST and researchers at the Intelligent Robots and Systems group of ISR/IST (http://welcome.isr.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/projects_cat/irsg/).

The research will be conducted at the Intelligent Robots and Systems group of the Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR/IST) (http://welcome.isr.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/projects_cat/irsg/). ISR/IST is the home to more than 40 PhDs and part of the LARSyS (Laboratory for Robotics and Engineering Systems - http://www.larsys.pt). ISR/IST is engaged in a new generation of research challenges pushing the frontiers of knowledge, while offering world-class doctoral training with top universities (e.g. dual/joint degrees with MIT, EPFL, CMU) and fueling the collaboration with industry. ISR/IST develops state-of- the-art engineering solutions and projects with a clear societal impact, and has a long track record of participation in EU and other international projects. Requirements: the candidates are expected to have a MSc of equivalent degree with strong background in robotics, artificial intelligence, information/computer engineering or a mix of the three. Good programming skills in Python and/or C++, and experience with ROS, are also expected. The working language is English, so good written and oral communication skills are also required.
