Dear all,

Applications are open for one postdoctoral research grant at the Institute for Plasmas and Nuclear Fusion (IPFN), Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon, to develop novel research work on the topic of multi-UAV cooperative navigation.

The selected candidate will work on a project of SaR operations in scenarios of nuclear disaster, encompassing a fleet of drones. The project include the three main tasks: (1) autonomous and cooperative navigation of a fleet of autonomous drones, covering the area in an optimal way, in closed loop with the real-time construction of the contamination map, while maintaining exposure of the drones to radiation at a safe level, (2) real-time mapping of the scenario with the quantification of the contamination levels, and (3) assuring an effective and resilient wireless data communication among the drones and with the ground station. The selected candidate shall have expertise, at least, for one of these tasks and he/she will work with the support of 3 MSc grantees, each one from a different research lab, with expertise for the different tasks.

The research work will be carried out in the context of a fully funded 3-year R&D project, in collaboration with different research labs with expertise in robotics, nuclear physics, and communications. High-quality scientific publications and participation on scientific conferences are expected during the lifetime of the project.

The research will be conducted at IPFN (https://www.ipfn.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/), one of the largest Portuguese research units in Physics and with more than 10 years of experience in remote handling with mobile robots in nuclear facilities (https://www.ipfn.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/rh). The role of the IPFN at national and international level was recognized in the last evaluation of R&D units by FCT, the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology, where IPFN was awarded with the classification “Exceptional”. The research will also involve a strong collaboration with the other project partners: Institute for Systems and Robotics (ISR-Lisboa, http://www.isr.tecnico.ulisboa.pt/), Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT, http://ww.it.pt/), and Technological and Nuclear Campus (CTN, http://www.itn.pt/).

Requirements: the candidates are expected to hold a Doctoral degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Technological Physics Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.

Application:
	Deadline: 16-September-2018
Duration of the grant: 30 months (full time), with possible extension
	Expected starting date: October, 2018
Place: IST Alameda campus, Lisbon, Portugal

To request further information and to apply, send an email to rh-jobs at ipfn.tecnico.ulisboa.pt as soon as possible. Please include a cover letter and your Curriculum-Vitae, a statement of academic qualifications, and at least one reference willing to provide a recommendation letter.

Best regards,

Alberto Vale (IPFN/IST)
Rodrigo Ventura (ISR-Lisboa/IST)
