                           Call for Papers of
                         IROBOT at EPIA2011
5th International Thematic Track on Intelligent Robotics
                      http://epia2011.appia.pt

                          To be held at
EPIA 2011 - 15th Portuguese Conference on Artificial Intelligence,
             October 10-13, 2011, Lisbon, Portugal

EPIA 2011 is an international conference with the patronage of the
Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence (APPIA). Its purpose
is to discuss and promote research in all areas of Artificial Intelligence
(AI) and related disciplines. Aspects covered range from theoretical and
foundational issues to applications interesting researchers, engineers and
practitioners. The conference is structured as a set of Thematic Tracks.

## IROBOT at EPIA2011 Description

IROBOT at EPIA2011 poses itself as a follow-up on the previous 4 International
Workshops/Thematic Tracks on Intelligent Robotics held at EPIA since 2005.
As in previous editions, its main purpose is to bring together researchers,
engineers and other professionals interested in the application of AI
techniques in real/simulated robotics to discuss current work and future
directions. Each edition tries to promote a focal debate theme.

Robotics, from the point of view of AI, has been an important
application field, from which AI has also gained. Namely the dynamic
and unforeseen nature of the environment, especially for mobile robots,
has fostered research in these aspects of AI. In recent years, humanoid
robots have emerged as one of the most dynamic areas in mobile robots.
The development of computing power and robust lightweight materials
as well as powerful algorithms has made viable consistent approaches to
humanoids. The long-term interest in such robots is to better interact
socially with humans who tend to better accept anthropomorphic
devices. Humanoid robots present different research topics open, from
dynamic control of balance when moving or in standstill gestures, to
development of better sensing setups and to intelligent actuation. The
adaptation and application of AI techniques to humanoid robotics will
constitute the focal theme of the IROBOT at EPIA2011 Thematic Track.

## Important Dates

10 May 2011: Paper Submission Deadline
10 Jun 2011: Author Notification
1 Jul 2011: Deadline for Final Camera-Ready
10-13 Oct 2011: EPIA'2011 Conference

## Topics of Interest

The IROBOT at EPIA2011 Thematic Track will be structured around the
following themes:

 - AI planning for robotics
 - Autonomous vehicles
 - Biped walking and humanoid robotics
 - Cognitive robotics
 - Computer vision and object recognition
 - Coordination in robotics
 - Evolutionary robotics and reactive intelligence
 - Human-robots interaction
 - Intelligent buildings and warehouses
 - Intelligent transportation systems
 - Learning and adaptation in robotics
 - Mobile robot performance measures
 - Modelling and simulating complex robots
 - Multi-robot systems
 - Field robots
 - Real-time reactivity
 - Robot behaviour engineering
 - Robot expressiveness and emotional awareness
 - Robot rescue
 - Robotic surveillance
 - Sensor fusion
 - Simulation and virtual reality systems in robotics

This list is not exhaustive. Papers may address one or more of the topics,
and authors should not feel limited by them. Unlisted but related topics
are also acceptable, provided they fit in the Thematic Track main subject.

## Paper Submission

Authors are invited to submit original research contributions or
experience reports in English. Scientific or technical articles describing
state-of-the-art techniques, algorithms, systems, environments, problems
or applications relevant to the area of Intelligent Humanoid Robotics
may be submitted. Papers discussing application transfer from simulated
to real robots and papers showing socially useful robotic applications
generated by participations in robotic competitions are also welcome.
Although the main focus is on humanoid robots, there will be space for
reporting research in AI applied to other types of robots.

Submissions must follow the guidelines specified in the EPIA’2011 site.
Papers should not exceed twelve (12) pages in length and must be formatted
according to the information for LNCS authors. Papers must be submitted
in PDF (Adobe's Portable Document Format) format and will not be accepted
in any other format. Papers that exceed 12 pages or do not follow the LNCS
guidelines risk being rejected automatically without a review.
Authors must remove their names from the submitted papers, and should take
reasonable care not to indirectly disclose their identity.
More information about the Springer's Lecture Notes in Computer Science
(LNCS) are available on the Springer LNCS Web site.
http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-6-793341-0

Accepted papers, must be presented at the conference by one of the authors.
At least one author of each accepted paper must register for the conference.

Papers of higher quality will be published in Lecture Notes in Artificial
Intelligence (LNAI), by Springer (proceedings indexed by the Thomson ISI
Web of Knowledge). All other accepted papers will be published in the
local proceedings book.
