1. RoboCup 2014

Dear RoboCuppers
the local organization of RoboCup 2014 is pleased to send
you this first newsletter with important information to help you plan your
participation in RoboCup 2014.

RoboCup 2014 will be held in João Pessoa, Brazil, from July 19th to 25th.
João Pessoa, located on the beautiful northeast Brazilian coast, is the
easternmost point of continental Americas and the capital of Paraíba state.
The city is a pleasant touristic place with a population of approximately
720,000 inhabitants. João Pessoa is famous for its natural beauty, clean
swimming water beaches and lively seafront, also known as the second
greenest capital city in the world.

The venue chosen to host our event is the Convention Center “Poeta Ronaldo
Cunha Lima”, a building area of approximately 40,000m2. Major and Junior
competitions, as well as the Symposium, will be held in the Convention
Center Complex.

As most hotels are located on the main seaside area of João Pessoa (Cabo
Branco, Tambaú and Manaíra beaches), free shuttle will be available for
RoboCuppers from/to the hotels to/from the competition site. The local
agencies working for RoboCup 2014 can help you booking hotel rooms, flights,
as well as transfers from the nearest airports (João Pessoa, Recife and
Natal).

Further information can be found on RoboCup 2014 website

4. Visa ( <mailto:visa at robocup2014.org> visa at robocup2014.org)

You can apply for a short stay visa at the Brazilian embassy or consulate in
your country before the competitions start. Please, make sure you have a
look at the embassy/consulate site in advance to check how long the visa
process takes once it depends on each country. For some countries, your are
required to have a visa issued 90 days prior to your first arrival in
Brazil. In these cases, the sooner you start the better! For teams that need
VISA, a letter of invitation can be provided after team registration and
payment have been completed. The details regarding the VISA procedure can be
found in our website together with the procedure to apply for a letter of
invitation ( <http://www.robocup2014.org/?page_id=539>

5. Air Transportation and Transfer from Airports (
<mailto:travelling at robocup2014.org> travelling at robocup2014.org)

João Pessoa is accessible by air and road. Although João Pessoa airport has
flights from most Brazilian cities, most international routes in the
northeast arrive in Recife and Natal airports, located 125km and 200km from
João Pessoa, respectively. The official travel agency, Luck Viagens, can
help you booking your flight. For transfer from one of these airports, a
variety of special arrangements for participants at reduced rates has been
made. It is highly recommended to make use of these, which can be booked
through RoboCup 2014 receptive agency in the website (
<http://www.robocup2014.org/?page_id=129>
http://www.robocup2014.org/?page_id=129)

6. Accommodation ( <mailto:accommodation at robocup2014.org>
accommodation at robocup2014.org)

Joao Pessoa is considered a safe place to visit, especially along the coast
and in tourist places. The coast area that encompasses the Tambau and Cabo
Branco beaches are places where you can walk during the day and the evening
comfortably. In those areas, there is a special tourist police force that
can help you in English language and that is prepared to receive tourists
and to guarantee the safety of city's visitors. The overall suggestion is to
stay in this area and avoid to walk away from the coast. The RECOMMENDED
hotels for the event will be along the Tambaú and Cabo Branco Beaches. All
activities of the event will happen in these areas, from which there will be
free shuttles to the RoboCup venue. You can book your hotel directly through
our website with special prices for RoboCuppers. Low-budget rooms will be
available for the Junior league. WE STRONGLY DISCOURAGE you from booking
hotels out of this area. Please, use the list of hotels on the website (
<http://www.robocup2014.org/?page_id=127>
http://www.robocup2014.org/?page_id=127) to assure that your visit in
Brazil will be very comfortable and pleasant.

****************************************************************************

7. Shuttle

There will convenient, free and safe shuttle available for RoboCuppers
from/to the hotels to/from the competition site. The shuttle lines and
schedule will be available in the website. All hotels indicated in our
accommodation list are in the area covered by the lines. Stop points will be
clearly marked in the hotel list. The use of shuttles is highly recommended
to all participants.

8. Cargo ( <mailto:cargo at robocup2014.org> cargo at robocup2014.org)

If you need to transport your robots/equipments as cargo, you will need a
specialized company to transport it and proceed with temporary importation
in Brazil. Although you are free to choose any company around the world for
cargo transportation, WE DO NOT RECOMMEND IT. When you temporary import
something to Brazil, you should pay taxes. However, as an event, we can have
temporary admission through our universities/societies without paying these
taxes. In this sense, we recommend to contactLauro Victor de Barros
Despachos Aduaneiros Ltda which is the the RoboCup 2014 official cargo
transportation agency. The company is aware of all the processes involved in
the temporary admission for the event and it is our proxy for it. They are a
third party company specially prepared to deal with the particular
conditions of RoboCup and they will provide a point-to-point transportation
from almost all countries. Moreover, they can assure the delivery of your
cargo directly to the venue on schedule if you follow the procedures and
dates. If teams bring cargo through other companies, they would have to
follow the traditional path, what could lead to delays. Please, refer to the
website for more information ( <http://www.robocup2014.org/?page_id=131>
http://www.robocup2014.org/?page_id=131).
