Actually 6, and not 5, DoF in each leg would make much more sense
for robotic soccer with humanoid robots than 4, instead of 3, DoF in the
arms. This is what my and many other teams in the humanoid robot league
are using.
Despite its large feet the walking of the Nao was very slow and instable
during the presentation in Atlanta and it could not kick.
Therefore during practice and matches one must expect the robot
to fall down frequently (by instability but also by purpose as goalie).
This requires not only high robustness in the mechanical construction but
also the possibility to develop an autonomous getting up motion with the
current robot kinematics.
It is for good reasons that in the humanoid league it took all teams
several years to develop a robust and stable humanoid robot
mechanics and locomotion.
During the presentation in Atlanta Aldebaran was actually surprised
that a carpet is being used for Legged Robot Soccer competitions
which showed to me that they had not investigated much about
the background, the state of the art and the requirements of the
Four-Legged and Humanoid Robot Leagues.
Now, as the decision about the platform has been made by the Committee and
the Trustees, I think the RoboCup Federation should urge Aldebaran
to monitor the 4L (or future SPL) mailing list and to answer questions
of the teams on a regular basis.
There should be no need for guessing about important robot details.
I am also wondering why only 8 teams should be supported by Naos in 2008.
In case there is sufficient interest more teams should be allowed
to participate.
Finally, as a member of the Four-Legged and the Humanoid Robot League
I am very curious to see the performance of the Nao in 2008
in direct comparison with the humanoid KidSize League.
Perhaps also some demos can be organized
(if possible in soccer games, at least in basic soccer abilities
like walking or kicking).
With best regards,
Oskar
