The organizers invite you to submit a proposal for a presentation-poster at the
ICRA 2010 Workshop on “New variable impedance actuators for the next
generation of robots”.
The workshop will take place on Monday May, 3 2010 in Anchorage, Alaska.

The workshop will consist of a number of interactive presentations,
with short abstract presentations and direct discussion in a poster
session. There will be a few keynote speeches and a roundtable
discussion to provide further focus.

Description:
During the past 50 years the assumption of most robotic designers was
“the stiffer the better”. This assumption may still hold true for
standard industrial robotic applications which require accurate
reference-trajectory tracking. For the next 50 years, however, a whole
new generation of robots will be used in daily society of which the
fundaments are developed today. For the advancement of these new
robots, a new generation of actuators is one of the key needs to
achieve adaptable, safe, and energy efficient robots. This workshop
will deal with the latest developments in understanding the principles
and the technologies of variable impedance actuators in natural and
artificial systems, and the control strategies in robotic applications
in the field of manipulation, locomotion and rehabilitation.

Topics for contributions include but are not limited to:
- Hardware design for variable impedance actuation
- Safety analysis and injury indices in human-robot interaction in the
variable compliance context
- Motion and stiffness control in the presence of variable compliance
- Mechanical-control co-design
- Energy efficient walking and running
- Application dependent planning of the adjustable stiffness value
- Planning safe and dependable robot motion
- Biologically inspired design and control of VIA actuators
- Experimental validation
- Biomechanical modelling and measurement of human impedance
- Optimal control for motion and stiffness planning

We want to focus on high quality presentations and posters and
therefore we do not
request to submit a full length paper. If you are interested to give a
talk-poster
please send us (via.icraworkshop (at ) gmail.com) a brief biography and a short
(max 1 A4) summary of the contents. We encourage contributions
containing both a state-of-the-art as well as personal research together
with some elements to start an interesting discussion.

Important Dates:
- March 1, 2010 Deadline submission proposal
- March 15, 2010 Selection of presentations and posters
- May 3, 2010 Full-day workshop at ICRA 2010

Kind regards and hope to see you in Alaska,

The organizers,
Alin Albu-Schaeffer, Antonio Bicchi and Bram Vanderborght
