Call for Presentations
RSS 2008 Workshop
Design and Control of Variable Impedance Actuators for Physical
Interaction of Robots with Humans and their Environment
http://mech.vub.ac.be/RSS2008_VIA/Index.htm

The organizers invite you to submit a proposal for a presentation at the
RSS 2008 Workshop on Design and Control of Variable Impedance
Actuators for Physical Interaction of Robots with Humans and their
Environment
The workshop will take place on Saturday, June 28th at the Swiss
Federal Institute of Technology Zurich in Zurich, Switzerland.

Important Dates:
     - submission deadline - 5/15/2008
     - notification of acceptance - 5/22/2008
     - workshop - 6/28/2008

Description:
There is a growing attention towards the design of actuators and
transmission mechanisms that can make robots of the next generation to
perform powerful, accurate and fast motion, while remaining at all
times safe and keep the energy consumption low.
This half-day workshop will focus on a discussion on the design and
control of variable impedance actuators in robotic applications in the
field of manipulation, locomotion and rehabilitation.

Topics for contributions include but are not limited to:
     - Hardware design for variable impedance actuation
     - Safety analysis and injury indices in human-robot interaction
in the variable compliance context
     - Motion and stiffness control in the presence of variable compliance
     - Mechanical-control co-design
     - Energy efficient walking and running
     - Application dependent planning of the adjustable stiffness value
     - Planning safe and dependable robot motion
     - Biologically inspired design and control of VIA actuators

We want to focus on high quality presentations and therefore we do not
request to submit a full length paper. If you are interested to give a
talk please send us (via.rssworkshop at gmail.com) a brief biography and
a short (max 1 A4) summary of the presentation. We encourage
presentations containing both a state-of-the-art as well as personal
research together with some elements to start an interesting
discussion.

Kind regards and hope to see you in Zurich,

The organizers,
Alin Albu-Schaeffer, Antonio Bicchi and Bram Vanderborght
