At this point, we've both spent quite some time thinking about tighter bounds for `MinDistance()` and `MaxDistance()`, but I think the code here is fine for now.  So, I can merge this now (after making a final check over the code), and we can open a ticket for tighter bounds and consider that in some other PR once we come up with better bounds.  What do you think?
