 As a matter of interest, is there a reason you need to compile form source
 aside from package availability, i.e. are you changing it yourself or just
 using it as a library?  I ask because we do have
 [https://launchpad.net/~sterling/+archive/mlpack 1.0.1 packaged on
 Launchpad] and our build server has
 [http://hotwheels.cc.gt.atl.ga.us:8080/job/MLPACK_Debian_Package_1.0.X/71/
 successfully built 1.0.2], though I do not recommend installing the 1.0.2
 debs from our build server because we don't support that method.

 I ask because I am trying to gauge the priority of providing prebuilt
 packages.
