The cross-disciplinary initiative supported by this ADVANCE Leadership Award contributes to the success and advancement of minority women faculty in science and engineering, thereby enhancing their retention and increasing their ranks. Biographies: Dr. Gilda Barabino's research interests are in the areas of sickle cell adhesion, cellular and tissue engineering, and diversity in science and engineering. She has led numerous NSF-funded projects and initiatives designed to enhance faculty development and to increase opportunities in science and engineering for members of underrepresented groups. Her work has paid special attention to the unique experiences of minority women faculty and innovative strategies for their professional development and advancement. Dr. Cheryl Leggon's research underscores the criticality of disaggregating data by race/ethnicity AND gender to develop policy, programs and practices that enhance and expand the United States' science and engineering talent pool. Before coming to Tech in 2002, she was Director of Women's Studies at Wake Forest University. In 2006, she was elected to membership in Sigma Xi. In 2007, she was elected as a Fellow to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for her work on the intersection of gender, race and ethnicity and career pathways in science and engineering.
