Do you have an interest in fields related to robotics and artificial intelligence? Do you just love to write software? Well Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is just the place for you. JPL is a NASA research center governed by Caltech located in Pasadena, CA. Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of JPL during work and then the sunny California weather after. With the great number of projects available on lab, you are sure to find one to suit your interests or maybe you could even propose one of your own. As indicated in the meeting notes (Thanks Linda! ^_^), at our next Women@CC meeting (Wednesday, September 24, 5:30p, 104b), we are going to be voting on the event logo/design for this year's Spooktacular (Fall Festival) event! If you would like to submit a design, please email it to me (cpham3(a)gatech.edu) before the meeting or bring it with you to the meeting. A sketched drawing will be okay for the meeting, but keep in mind that it needs to be computerized before we can work with it. Speaker: Jon Orwant, Google Boston Office Jon Orwant is an engineering manager at Google, where he leads a team working on Book Search. He received his PhD from MIT in 1999, becoming CTO of O'Reilly and then director of research at France Telecom before joining Google. He's the author of several programming books, including the bestselling Programming Perl. He also created the Internet Quiz Show, taught game design at MIT, and invented the world's first Internet stock-picking game. In 2004 he received the White Camel Lifetime Achievement award for contributions to Perl. Topic: Google Book Search In its attempt to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful, Google is helping by digitizing the world's books. In this talk, Jon Orwant will discuss some of the technical challenges involved with scanning and indexing every book on Earth.
